We moved in August from a very old home. When we first moved to that home in 1999, we were on a shoestring budget. There was a sturdy set of stairs to the basement that we eventually wanted to remodel, but the stairs were lacking in visual appeal. We didn't have the money to reface or carpet them. My next best solution was Paint!
Paint equals almost instant gratification for me. I love using color to change my environment. It's simple and relatively inexpensive.
I sanded the steps and then primed everything. I used painting tape to mark off a faux runner and for the red squares on either side. It was such a fun inexpensive project. It really made a statement.
You can actually save money on paint at your local hardware store by using coupons, when available. Another option is to ask the clerk about "oops" or "seconds" paint. These are quarts or gallons that were either returned or were made in mistake. They're typically much cheaper than a regular gallon. The only downside is that you have to take what's available. However, it can be a great way to save money!
