Retail Bootcamp: Create a Gift Giving Budget

Do you often find yourself strapped for money whenever you have an occassion that requires a gift? Believe me, we've all been there. Here are a few strategies to help you get started.

1) Just do it. Sit down and make a Gift Giving Budget. Plan ahead for all your Birthdays and Holidays. If you take a few minutes now, when those occassions arrive, you're not caught off guard. My husband and I take part of our tax refund each year and set it aside for Christmas. Now I can rest easy because we've planned ahead (and I can use that money to get great deals off season).

2) Start a Gift Giving envelope. We're big Dave Ramsey fans (Financial Peace University). He advocates an envelope system. Each pay period/month, put a set amount of money in your Gift Giving Envelope. When you get a bonus or extra money, add to your envelope. This will help you from over spending on your Gifts.

3) Start a
Gift Reserve or Stockpile. When you find great deals at rock bottom prices that will make perfect gifts, and you already have the money set aside, buy it! Create a gift box or bag in a closet, under the bed, etc... for all these gifts. Then you can go "shopping" from your own stockpile while saving time, money AND gas.

4) Don't shop last minute. You'll spend more money than you had intended.

Giving is so much fun. Saving money while you're doing it is even better. Try thinking outside the box. Shop off season. Watch for sales. And most importantly, stay posted to Your Retail Helper for all the newest retail deals.

Retail Bootcamp: Create a Gift Reserve

What is a Gift Reserve or Gift Stockpile?
Creating a "reserve" of items you've bought at rock bottom prices.

Why should I Stockpile a Gift Reserve?
Typically, if you buy a gift at the moment of need, you'll spend more than if you planned ahead. Our goal is to cut your Gift Giving Budget. If you buy items at rock bottom prices, you can stock up for a gift giving opportunity.

Where should I keep my Gift Reserve?
Anywhere you have space. Consider using a spare drawer, a box in the attic/closet or under the bed. (Just make sure little fingers can't find it.)

How will I know what gifts I'll need in the future?
Plan ahead. Make a list of all birthdays, weddings, anniversaries. If you have three weddings this summer, you can buy three gifts when you find a great deal and save money. You can also buy gifts that are age specific to your child(ren), because inevitably they'll be asked to parties by their classmates. Be an opportunist when it comes to great deals.

What about Gifts off a Gift Registry?
Would your friend be happier to know you put yourself in a financial disadvantage because you felt compelled to buy something expensive off their registry rather than buying them a high quality gift at a fraction of the cost? If you're on a tight budget and you give a generous thoughtful gift, it shouldn't matter.

How do I get started?
Again, plan ahead. Make a list of all gift giving events. Think outside the box and stay posted to Your Retail Helper. We'll find the great gift giving deals out there.

Retail Bootcamp: Save Money on Halloween Costumes Tip #5 Shop After Holiday Sales

Retail Bootcamp is a series that will teach you step-by-step basics to saving money on Retail for yourself, home, gifts, holidays, etc...

This month we've been highlighting our favorite frugal Halloween Costume strategies. Make sure to check out all our top Halloween Deals, Coupons and Sales!

Tip #5

Shop After Holiday Sales

You can get some incredible deals for the following year if you shop the day of Halloween or right after. Discounts can be anywhere from 50% - 90% off. Stock up on decorations, play clothes and party supplies, too.

Tip #4 - Make Your Own - We always had some much fun being creative making our own costumes when we were kids. Use coupons and sales to buy all your supplies and accessories. Print several copies of the coupon and pay with separate transactions to save the most money.

Tip #3 - Sales & Coupons - Watch for coupons at some of your favorite stores and stack them with sales to save even more money. Check out our Retail Round Up for a list of printable in-store coupons. Also watch for all the Hot Online Halloween Deals we post on a regular basis.

Tip #2 - Consignment Sales & Garage Sales - This is my favorite tip. I buy high quality costumes for a fraction of the cost. Our kids use them as dress up clothes all year long! Visit Consignment Mommies to find a sale near you.

Tip #1 - Costume Exchange - Expand your network of possibilities. Ask friends and family if they'd be willing to trade and/or borrow costumes. Send an email, post on Facebook, put a note in your Mom's Club Newsletter, etc... Or make a night of it and have a party where everyone brings their old Halloween Costumes. (Make sure you write your name in your costume to ensure it returns.)

CHALLENGE
Challenge your older kids to see who can save the most money on their costume this year. Start them off with frugal cost saving skills that will last a lifetime!

REMINDER
Check back every Thursday afternoon for our Retail Round Up, which is a huge list of printable mall and store coupons you'll need for your weekend shopping! BTW - Have you checked out our new "Retail 101" ebook?

Back to School Money Saving Tips: Pay It Forward

Getting ready for Back to School can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Your Retail Helper has teamed up with Chrissy from Becentsable to compile our best Back to School money saving tips.

Tip #29
Pay It Forward

There are so many children who start school without the proper School Supplies. If you’re able to get items for Free or at Rock Bottom Prices, then by all means Pay It Forward. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce, Church or contact the School District directly to see what organizations accept donations. Once school starts, ask your child’s teacher what supplies she might still need in the classroom. Get the kids involved, as well. What a valuable lesson to teach them to be grateful for what they have and compassion for those that don’t.

Back to School Money Saving Tips: Re-purpose Clothes

Getting ready for Back to School can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Your Retail Helper has teamed up with Chrissy from Becentsable to compile our best Back to School money saving tips.

Tip #27
Re-purpose Clothes

Are there any clothes you could re-purpose? One year, I cut off old jeans and made them into shorts for one my boys. For girls, you could transform a short pair of jeans into capris by adding some cute fabric to the hem either by sewing or using fabric adhesive.

Back to School Money Saving Tips: Stack Sales, Coupons and Rebates

Getting ready for Back to School can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Your Retail Helper has teamed up with Chrissy from Becentsable to compile our best Back to School money saving tips.

Tip #25
Stack Sales, Coupons and Rebates

We’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth driving home the point, you’ll save more money if you stack a sale price with coupons, rebates and/or store incentives.

Don’t forget, if a retailer offers store coupons, you can also use a manufacturer coupon on the same item. Every Thursday we publish our Retail Round Up, which is a list of available printable store coupons. Also make sure to check out a retailer’s website to see if they offer coupons. For example, Target has a number of store coupons on their site. We’ll also post Back-to-School manufacturer coupons as they become available.

Back to School Money Saving Tips: Shop Dollar Stores

Getting ready for Back to School can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Your Retail Helper has teamed up with Chrissy from Becentsable to compile our best Back to School money saving tips.

Tip #24
Shop the Dollar Stores

While products may not be the top of the line, they're certainly good enough to help your children throughout the year. Some Dollar Stores are great, and others are not so much. Search your area and see where the best ones are, and stick to them. The inventory changes, but you can score big savings when the other stores have stopped caring about Back to School.

Back to School Money Saving Tips: Make Book Covers

Getting ready for Back to School can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Your Retail Helper has teamed up with Chrissy from Becentsable to compile our best Back to School money saving tips.

Tip #23
Make Your Own Book Covers

Use the brown bags from your grocery store and recycle them. Cut them and lay flat like wrapping paper and cover with the brown side out. The paper is super sturdy and will last. Your kids will be able to draw and design on the outside to their hearts content, allowing them to show their creative side.

Back to School Money Saving Tips: Buy What You Can

Getting ready for Back to School can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Your Retail Helper has teamed up with Chrissy from Becentsable to compile our best Back to School money saving tips.

Tip #22
Only Buy What You Can

If money is tight just buy the minimal amount your child(ren) needs now.

While there are tons of great sales now, there will also be a fair amount once the kids return to school as stores want to get rid of their inventory and by this time your child will see what others have and you can determine what is a necessity.
