DIY: Chalkboard Subway Sign

I love to save money on all things related to Retail, but you can also save an incredible amount money by doing your own DIY projects for gifts and decorations. By the way, I found some incredible inspiration on Pinterest (you can follow me there, too). Your Retail Helper

I bought this huge frame at a local Thrift Store for just $15 (which if you've priced out frames at your local hobby/craft store, is a steal). I'm sure the sales clerk was wondering what on earth I was going to do with a picture with four enormous geese on it. :) But, I saw potential.

I sanded down the frame and did a faux antiqued finish on it. My husband cut a piece of thin board that replaced the infamous geese print. We painted it with several coats of Chalkboard paint. And, voila!

I needed something large in scale, because I knew I wanted to put it on top of a large bookcase that takes up the entire wall. It couldn't be a small chalkboard print or it would get lost. It looks fabulous and definitely makes a statement. We'll eventually paint and remodel the bookcase and add moulding to the top. When all is said and done, the effect will be exactly what I was hoping for.

By the way, I did the Chalkboard Design myself. I found some great ideas on Pinterest and took it from there. I can't wait to change out the design on a regular basis. Who knows what I'll do next. (I'll post pictures as I update it.)

I love this idea! I'm always impressed at the upcycling ideas people come up with...I wish I were that creative. I can execute the idea as long as someone else dreams it up! ;)

Thanks, Debbi. It was so much fun to do. But don't be misled. The idea wasn't original to me, either. I just took one idea and modified it. I saw potential. Creativity feeds me. :)
