Save Money When Moving: More Money Saving Strategies

Retail Bootcamp is a series that will teach you step-by-step basics to saving money on Retail for yourself, home, gifts, holidays, etc...

I'm passing along what I've learned these last couple of months while preparing to move. Here are  some more practical and easy ways you can Save Money When Moving.

Tip #4 - More Money Saving Strategies

  • Hire a mover for large items only. Remember when I said time is money? We used a mover just for the big stuff (ie furniture, appliances, etc...). It was more reasonable than you would think. They accomplished in 4 hours what it would have taken us 12 or more to do. Make sure to check Better Business Bureau for any complaints.
  • Use a Groupon for cleaning services. Watch for deals as they come up and snag them. Make sure the service is available in your city, specifically.
  • It never hurts to ask for discounts or use coupons. When you need to hire a contractor (exterminators, plumbing, roofers, etc…) for work on your current home or the one you're buying, ask if they offer any discounts. Offer to do a trade out, too. Use a certified contractor for any work that requires documentation or a warranty. Also verify if they are insured.
  • Re-evaluate insurance. It pays to be vigilant. We hadn't had a quote on our home owners/umbrella/automobile/jewelry insurance in years. We decided to look into a different company as we started the moving process. We discovered we could cut our premiums by almost 50%. Lesson learned. Shop around.
  • Do your research on utilities. Ask friends in the area who they use for phone/cable/trash. What's reliable? Are there any issues? When it comes to your actual electric/gas/water, try using a level pay system. It definitely helps with month-to-month budgeting.
