DIY Saving Money on Decorating: Custom Made Roman Shades

Since our move this past summer, we're finally starting to work on remodeling and decorating our home, room by room. Our first project was our daughter's bedroom. The house was built in the mid 70's and still has all the dark brown trim and moulding. We removed all of it from her room, including the doors to the room and closet. We primed and painted them white. Then painted the walls yellow.

I had some left over fabric I had used to make Roman Shades on our last home and knew it would be a perfect for this room, too. The only additional items I needed for this project were the Roman Shade tape and a little extra fabric to add to the bottom of the shade. I used coupons for the new materials.

Making custom Roman Shades is less expenisve than buying new. It also affords you more style/color options. Not to mention, if you have an older home, your windows won't be "Standard" size and you'll have fewer options available to you.

If I would have bought all the materials needed to make this Roman Shade, minus the scrap material I already had on hand, it would probably have cost me around $20-$30. (Remember, I said I had almost everything in my stash from past projects.) Not bad for a Custom Designer Roman Shade. Retail can be anywhere from $50+, even with coupons and sales.

Sewing these type of Roman Blinds may not be for the faint of heart. It does take a certain amount of preparing and caculating, however, the end results are definitely worth it. You should have seen the smile on our daughter's face!

By the way, the Wallies were also an inexpensive way to add some punch and style to her room. We added them to her closet door, too. These particular Wallies are from Lot 26 Studio.
