DIY: Save Money on Birthdays By Making Your Own Birthday Cake

Do-It-Yourself is a great option for saving money on apparel, gifts, decorating and remodeling. Today's DIY Project is Homemade Birthday Cakes.

One way we save money on the Birthday celebrations is to decorate our own Birthday Cakes. Obviously, they're not "professional", but the kids never seem to mind and are so excited that I've made something just for them.

Our boys birthdays are only 9 days apart, so we've had several Birthday parties. This year, I made a Palm Tree Cake and a Volcano Cake

You can share cake molds between friends or get creative and use cake pans for a variety of different cakes. This Volcano Cake is a cake mold for a Princess Doll Cake (the kind where the cake is the dress and you put a doll in the top). I've also used a Football cake mold for a Surfboard by taking off the top layer. You can always add inexpensive embellishments, too.

Want to share some of your creations? We'd love to see them.
