DIY: Save Money on Decorating by Making Your Own Ottomans / Chairs
My husband and I collaborated on two Ottomans several years ago. It was an inexpensive way to add seating to our home while being able to accommodate our specific needs and decor choices. Each one cost $35 total, as opposed to $50-$100 retail.
We used MDF to build the frame and added foot pads to each leg. To save even more money, I used coupons at my favorite Fabric store for the Foam Cushion (I'd recommend at least 3 inches) and the material. I sewed the slip cover myself. If we ever get tired of this particular fabric, I can easily sew a new one.
We've used these ottomans as tables, seating at the dining room table, extra seating during parties, etc... When we remodel our basement, I plan to make several for chairs to slip under a large desk for the kids. That way, they can each have a seat, but it won't take up floor space. When they're done, they can just slide the ottomans/chairs under the desk.
What other creative and money saving ways have you decorated your home?
