Save Money By Weatherizing Your Home

We moved last Summer and have been trying to find ways to weatherize our home to cut down on the utility costs.

When my husband inspected the attic, we realized the house was extremely under insulated. In fact, many of the can lights weren't sealed properly and were leaking heat back into the house.

My husband took on the chore of insulating the attic himself. It's been arduous at best, since there are many tight spaces and pitches. He built boxes around the can lights to keep the heat from seeping from the attic to the house. Then he installed the insulation. It took 3-4 days. In hindsight, we might have been better off having the insulation blown in. Lesson learned.

We're anticipating the cost of the insulation to help cut our utility bill by 25% or more each month. We're also looking at all the Window / Door casings, inspecting the cracks around the frame of the house and foundation.

In addition, we're trying to be proactive about turning off and unplugging appliances when they're not in use.

What other tips have helped you cut your household utilities?
