Retail Bootcamp: Save Money on Birthday Decorations, Invitations, Gifts and More

Retail Bootcamp is a series that will teach you step-by-step basics to saving money on Retail for yourself, home, gifts, holidays, etc...

There are so many great ways to save money when planning a Birthday Party. Last week, we talked about making your own Birthday Cake. Today, we'll look at more opportunities to slim the Birthday budget.

Now that the big date has been set for the Birthday Party, you're now wondering how you're going to stay under budget with your Decorations, Paper Goods and Invitations/Thank You's. Here's some easy things to consider on your road to saving money for Birthdays.

Paper Goods: Decorations, Napkins, Plates, Cups and Tablecloths

  • Buy generic colored Paper Goods and Decorations at After Holiday Sales. Do you really need the Batman plates and matching napkins? If you plan ahead and buy these items when they're drastically discounted, you can save quite a bit of money. Find red, green and white napkins after Christmas and the Holidays. Buy red, white and pink plates, cups and table cloths after Valentine's Day, etc... Be creative. Buy solid color balloons and then only buy one or two themed balloons to mix with the bunch.
  • Use Coupons when they're available. Stores like Party City, Michael's, JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby have great coupons on a regular basis. (See our weekly Retail Round Up for printable store coupons.) For JoAnn's, there's usually a coupon in the Sunday paper or you can sign up for their mailing list on their website.

Invitations and Thank You's

  • Make your own. Do have a Cricut machine? The possibilities of a cute creative card are endless with one of these machines. Or have your child make their own. It's personalized and sweet. You'll also be teaching your child to be creative, thoughtful and frugal.
  • Vistaprint is always having some type of promotion at deep discounts. Sometimes you can even get items for Free. You just pay shipping.
  • Watch for other Photo Deals. There are some companies who will offer Free cards and/or postcards. Make sure you stay posted to our websiteemail newsletter or Facebook . We'll let you know about all the frugal opportunities so you don't miss any time sensitive deals.
  • Daily Deal sites also have some deep discounts, usually 50%+ off, on stationery, photo deals, etc... Most of these deals don't expire for many months. So you can buy them now and wait until you're ready to use them. Again, watch for those deals on Your Retail Helper.
